Licensing Basic
What is font license?

When you purchase a font from Locomotype, you are buying a license — a legal permission to use the font software in specific ways. You are not buying ownership of the font itself. The typeface design and font files always remain the intellectual property of Locomotype.

The license defines what you can do with the font: which applications, which media, and at what scale. Different use cases (desktop design, websites, apps, advertising) require different license types.

How are your licenses structured?

Locomotype offers five license types, each designed for a specific use case:

  • Desktop — installing the font on computers and using it in design software
  • Web Font — embedding the font on websites as live text via CSS
  • ePub — using the font in e-books, digital magazines, or interactive PDFs
  • Digital Ads — HTML5 banners and dynamic ads served on third-party sites
  • App — embedding the font inside mobile or desktop applications

Each license type also has usage tiers (e.g. number of users, monthly pageviews, app downloads) that determine the price. You select both the license type and the tier at checkout.

Can I buy more than one license at the same time?

Yes! And we encourage it. You can select multiple license types for the same font in a single purchase. For example, you can buy Desktop + Web Font + App in one order.

When you buy two or more licenses together, a bundle discount is applied automatically:

  • 2 licenses: 10% off
  • 3 licenses: 15% off
  • 4 or more licenses: 20% off

The discount is calculated on the combined total of all selected licenses.

What is a usage tier?

Each license type is priced by usage volume. For example, a Desktop license is priced by the number of users (computers) that will have the font installed. A Web Font license is priced by monthly pageviews on the website where the font appears.

You select your tier at checkout. If your usage grows beyond your current tier, you can purchase an upgrade at any time. Contact us and we will arrange it.

I'm a freelancer designing for a client. Which license do I need?

It depends on the deliverable. Most freelance design work, for example creating a logo, brochure, or social media assets, falls under the Desktop license. The key question is: who will use the font, and for what?

  • If you are installing the font on your own computer to create artwork for a client, a Desktop license in your name covers the design work.
  • If the client also wants to install and use the font themselves (e.g. to edit documents in Word or InDesign), they need their own Desktop license.
  • If the deliverable includes a website where the font is used as live text, a Web Font license is required (typically in the client’s name).

If you are unsure, contact us before purchasing, we are happy to advise.

Can I share the font with my team or colleagues?

Yes, within the limits of your Desktop license tier. The tier you select at checkout determines how many users (seats) are covered. If you have a 1–5 Users license, up to five people at your organization can install and use the font.

Sharing with people outside your organization, or exceeding your tier, requires either a separate license for the additional users or an upgrade to a higher tier.

Can I use one license for multiple projects?

Yes. A Locomotype license is not project-based. It covers ongoing use within the scope of the license type and tier you purchased. For example, a Desktop 1–5 Users license lets those users use the font across all their design projects.

The exception is usage-volume licenses like Web Font (pageviews) or Digital Ads (impressions), where the tier represents cumulative usage across all projects.

Can I modify or customize the font?

Yes, for your own internal use. You may modify the font files to suit your needs, as long as the modified files are not redistributed or sublicensed to others, and remain subject to the Locomotype EULA.

If you need extended modification rights or want to create a custom version for redistribution, please contact us to discuss a custom license.

Font Styles & Families
What is the difference between a single style and a Complete Family?

A single style covers one specific weight or variant, for example, Regular, Bold, or Light Italic. A Complete Family covers all available styles of a font family in one purchase.

Complete Family licenses are priced at a special flat rate, not a simple multiplication of the single-style price, so they typically represent significant savings when you need multiple weights.

Can I buy just a few styles from a family instead of the complete set?

Yes. When purchasing a font family, you can select individual styles at checkout. You only pay for the styles you need. If you later want to add more styles, you can purchase them separately.

The license I need is for multiple styles. Is the price multiplied per style?

Yes, for individual style selections: the base price is multiplied by the number of styles you select, then the license multiplier and tier are applied on top.

This is why Complete Family is often better value when you need many styles, it has a fixed price regardless of the number of styles included.

Ordering & Payment
How do I place an order?

Browse the font you want on locomotype.com, then on the product page:

  • Select your styles (individual styles or Complete Family)
  • Select the license type(s) you need and the appropriate usage tier for each

A bundle discount is applied automatically if you select two or more license types.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit card and debit card (Visa, Mastercard, and other major cards), as well as PayPal. Payment is processed securely by our payment partners.

For international buyers: your bank may apply a foreign transaction fee or currency conversion charge. This is outside our control and is not refundable by Locomotype.

What currency are your prices in?

All prices on locomotype.com are in US Dollars (USD). Your bank or PayPal will handle the currency conversion if you are paying in a different currency.

Will I receive an invoice?

Yes. An order confirmation and invoice is sent to your email address immediately after purchase. It includes the font name, styles purchased, license type(s) and tier(s), bundle discount (if applicable), and total amount paid.

You can also access your order history and invoices from your account under My Account → Orders.

Do you charge VAT or sales tax?

Prices on locomotype.com do not include VAT or sales tax unless explicitly stated. Whether tax applies depends on your location and local regulations.

EU buyers: as a small independent seller, Locomotype may not be required to collect EU VAT. You may be responsible for self-assessing VAT under your local rules. Contact us if you need a VAT invoice.

Indonesian buyers: applicable local taxes may apply under Indonesian tax law.

Downloads & Delivery
How will I receive my font files?

After successful payment, your download links are made available in two places:

  • Your order confirmation email
  • Your account at locomotype.com → My Account → Downloads

Each download is a ZIP file containing the font in OTF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats, plus a copy of the Locomotype EULA.

What formats are included in the download?

Every download package includes the font in four formats:

  • OTF (OpenType) — for desktop use in most design software
  • TTF (TrueType) — for desktop use and broader software compatibility
  • WOFF (Web Open Font Format) — for web use
  • WOFF2 — the compressed modern web format, recommended for websites
Do I get the files for all styles, or only the ones I purchased?

You receive only the files for the styles you purchased. If you bought Regular and Bold, you receive two ZIP files — one per style. If you purchased the Complete Family, you receive one ZIP file containing all styles.

Download links are active for 30 days from the date of purchase, with a maximum of 5 downloads per file. We recommend downloading and saving your files to a secure location promptly after purchase.

If your link has expired or you have exceeded the download limit, contact us with your order number and we will restore access.

I didn't receive my download email. What should I do?

First, check your spam or junk mail folder — automated emails from order systems are sometimes filtered. Also check that you used the correct email address at checkout.

If you still cannot find it, log in to your account at locomotype.com and go to My Account → Downloads. Your files should be accessible there.

If the issue persists, contact us at [your email] with your order number and we will help you promptly.

Can I re-download my files in the future?

Yes, within the download limits above (30 days, 5 downloads per file). After this period, contact us with your order number and we will restore access — we keep records of all purchases.

Refund & Support
What is your refund policy?

All sales are final. Because our products are digital files delivered immediately upon payment, we do not offer refunds or exchanges once a download has been made available.

We will provide a replacement or refund if:

  • The font files you received are corrupt or technically defective, and we cannot provide a working replacement within a reasonable time.
  • You were charged but received no download access due to a technical error on our side.

To request an exception, contact us within 14 days of purchase with your order number and a description of the problem. We do not offer refunds for change of mind, incorrect license selection, or no longer needing the font.

We strongly encourage you to review font specimens and license details carefully before purchasing.

I purchased the wrong license. Can I exchange or upgrade?

We do not offer exchanges for an incorrect license purchase. However, if you need to upgrade to a higher tier or add a different license type, we can arrange an upgrade and apply your original payment as credit where possible. Contact us to discuss.

I need a license for a use case not listed. Can you help?

Yes. If you need a license for broadcast, film, merchandise, logo trademark registration, or any other use case not covered by our standard licenses, contact us at [your email]. We offer custom and extended licenses on request.
